These are Balinese festival flags, known as umbul umbul. Traditionally used in religious festivals in Indonesia, they’re growing in popularity for other uses - they look beautiful, have lots of visual impact (these ones are all at least five metres tall), and they’re brilliant for group work.
These examples were created during summer and autumn 2008 with children from all over Buckinghamshire, at events marking the handover of the Olympiad from China to the UK, in Aylesbury and at Dorney Lake, home of the 2012 Olympic rowing events.
The flag pictured below and right was created at Iver Nature Study Centre, with groups of adults with learning disabilities, as part of the Artworks for Business programme in Spring 2008.
