The Sky Whale series began in 2018. I was painting a mandala in my studio room at the top of our house, and felt the presence of a huge whale behind me while I painted, a starscape filling its body. I made a quick sketch of it and began painting soon after. They bring layers of meaning for me - symbolising great strength and tenderness, navigating great depths and distances with a precision and intuition that remains a mystery to us. As beings that humans have hunted, in some cases close to extinction, they also speak to a calling to reorientate ourselves as a species to safeguard all life, to regard our non-human brothers and sisters with reverence.
